If the dispensing buttons and flash alternately, the machine must be descaled.
It starts automatically when you press the button, but there are some things you need to prepare in advance. Total cycle time is 8 minutes. If the process is interrupted due to a power outage or any other reason, you must turn the machine off and on again and start from the beginning.

Preparing for descaling

Illy advises using descaling products for coffee machines, but if you don’t have one, you can just use water.

1. Remove the capsule.
2. Fill the water tank.
3. Since a lot of water is used for cleaning, prepare a container of at least 0.75 liters. A bowl or stainless steel bowl is good.

** Do not use vinegar, lye, salt or formic acid as they damage the machine.

Descaling procedure

1. Place a container larger than 0.75 liters with the power turned off. If the container is large and difficult to place on the floor, you can fold a dishtowel to make it level with the floor.
2. When you turn on the power, the button flashs left and right. Press the espresso button for more than 3 seconds within 15 seconds.
3. Only the Americano button will flash.

4. When you press the Americano button, stage 1 begins. The Americano button flashs rapidly and the action of dispensing water and stopping is repeated.

5. When stage 1 is completed, the espresso button turns on and the Americano button flashs.
About 400ml of water was used in the first stage of work. If the capacity of the container is insufficient, empty the water and prepare an empty container again.

6. Refill the water tank.
7. Place the container and press the Americano button to begin the second stage of cleaning.
   In the second stage, water is dispensed without stopping. A similar volume of water comes out as in stage 1.
   I thought I was done with stage 1, so I put the capsule in and the coffee water came out, but it didn’t matter.
   Since we are cleaning the inside of the machine, the end part where the nozzle and capsule are are not very meaningful.

8. When stage 2 is completed, the espresso button and the Americano button flash simultaneously. Wait until the both buttons become steady on.
The machine is now ready for use.

9. Just insert the capsule and brew delicious coffee as you normally would.
